Example garden

A small front garden, 6 by 4 m

A strip of soil between the pavement and the house, 6 by 4 metres, facing south, so in the sun. A paved path runs up the middle to the door. It is the first thing every visitor sees, and nobody wants to spend their Saturday mornings on it. It should look tidy all year and need almost no work.

The answers in this example

  • 6 × 4 m
  • The house just past the plot
  • Paving
  • Full sun
  • Soil moisture: medium
  • Little upkeep
  • Style: tidy and formal
  • How much work: little

The plot is an example, made up to show the result. The plan, the plants and every figure on this page are what the Verdlo studio works out from these answers, the same as it will for you.

The plants, and why these

Every one of these:
  • Copes with winters here
  • Likes the sun this spot gets
  • Matches the soil moisture
  • English yewTaxus baccata× 5Flowers from March to April · Native to Europe · EvergreenCaution: children, dogs and cats.
  • Blue Arrow juniperJuniperus scopulorum 'Blue Arrow'× 3Flowers in April · Evergreen · Goes upwardsMildly harmful if eaten (children, dogs and cats).
  • Japanese spiraeaSpiraea japonica 'Little Princess'× 2Flowers from June to August · Stays small

Poisonous if eaten: English yew (children, dogs and cats).

This example has no children or animals at home. Tick them in the studio, and the plants that could harm them leave the plan. How to make a garden safe for children and a dog

What the studio flagged

  • Underground pipes and cables cannot be seen from above: before digging, find out where they run from your local utility locating service or the utility companies.

Watering plan

In a dry summer week this garden needs about 72 l of water, with the beds watered every 7 days.

What it may cost

from 868 to 2,552 PLN

What this plan does not know

  • Your soil. The example assumes the soil from its answers, but it cannot know how acid or heavy yours is: a simple test kit from a garden centre tells you before you buy plants.
  • Pipes, cables and a septic tank under the ground. No plan can see them: mark them in the studio as ground to keep clear, and check where they run on your house's site plan before you dig.
  • Where your plot really ends. The sizes here are made up; yours come from the land register (type the parcel number into the studio), and only a surveyor marks them on the ground.
